Android 8.1 Oreo on Galaxy Note 4! [Install Guide/HOWTO]

While Samsung has stopped updating the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 since Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, you can still manually install your Note 4 to the latest Android 8.1 Oreo by installing a custom ROM if you have one of the models supported.

NOTE: This is an AOSP ROM! (What is AOSP?)

Supported models:

  • SM-N910F, SM-N910G, Sprint SM-N910P, SM-N910R4, T-Mobile SM-N910T, SM-N910T3, Verizon SM-N910V, Canadian SM-N910W8
  • Chinese Dual SIM models: SM-N9100ZC, SM-N9100ZH, SM-N91006W, SM-N91009W

Now, Lineage OS ROM 15.1 is based on Android 8.1 Oreo which will give you all the latest Android updates and features but this is still a “beta” version, meaning there may be bugs.  In my testings, I found everything to work well including calls, 4G LTE, bluetooth, all except broken front camera and video recording plus root.  For camera, you will be stuck with still photos on the back camera and please do not flash Magisk or SuperSU on this ROM as rooting will break your phone calls(it is a bug).  But these should be fixed in the near future and when they are, you should be able to update your ROM easily without starting over.

UPDATE: Camera works fine actually on the latest version and also root too!

For step-by-step installation, please refer to the video tutorial above.

    Hello.

I have a Canadian version from Rogers operator (SM-N910w8). This model had a lock bootloader. Few years ago, I installed the 3.10.94-Emotion-TW-nightly-r23 kernel to unlock the bootloader and be able to install a custom room. Your tutorial help me alot at this time with that.

Because I have a 5.1.1 version of Android right now, I think i have to change the Kernel and the bootloader to be able to install this Oreo 8.1 Room. So my question is : Do you think i can update the phone with Samsung Switch and after that, follow your tutorial to install Oreo or do I have to unlock the bootloader again to avoid a bootloop?

What do you think is the best way for me do that?

Thank you very much for your help.

How come Magisk link when not to Install it?

Please let me know if s pen working in this.

So I got it to finish installing but the 4 corners trick wouldn’t work until I just started hitting the corners clockwise repeatedly. At some point, it finished.

What’s the verdict? Install MAGISK OR SUPERSU or wait? A bit confusing upstairs..

  6. Redeye Dog says:

Hmmm. Not sure anyone cares, but I wanted to update with some information to share.

The ROM wouldn’t even run in recovery, because my bl was not one of the bl’s on it’s compatible list. The error message listed: TRLTE, TRLTEDT, TRLTECAN, TRLTESPR, TRLTETMO, TRLTEUSC, TRLTEVZW, TRLTEXX as prerequisite to running setup.

I had my old bl backed up and after putting in, setup started and installed as usual. Aside from setup crashing at the end (use 4 corner trick), I found a few concerns with the rom itself.

Not complaints because Oreo is AWESOME!!

Probably the biggest issue is it seems that this beta version does not recognize Samsung’s Fast Chargers, so it takes forever to charge! Couple that with no battery optimization included in this version, you’ll have a difficult time if you are a heavy user.

I wish split screen worked correctly. I used Dr. Ketan’s rom before this one with the same apps. They split screen fine. I get the message that “this app does not support split screen,” but we know better.

Caller voice quality could definitely be improved, too. This is a beta so I’m hoping that all this stuff gets resolved in future releases. Thanks Maxx and big thanks to the developers!

That’s all I can think of at the moment.

Thank you Redeye Dog. I’ve been waiting to hear better reviews, but can’t justify it as a daily. I am hoping for fixed bugs and more support for this ROM.

  8. Redeye Dog says:

OK. So it turns out my earlier complaint was not accurate. I had purchased a new battery a few day before making the transition to Oreo. I just didn’t notice hat it wasn’t working correctly. After replacing it again, fast charging works great and drain isn’t bad at all.

So everything works except, camera is a bit screwy at times, I miss incoming calls at times (but not sure if that has to do with my cheap service or not), but the most annoying thing has to be that I cannot use my pen for anything!

I was hoping I could at least take simple notes but ever since I installed this ROM, the pen has that little circle when I hover over (ANYTHING) and it seems to be stuck on inputting so the screen drags whn I want it to be still, characters get selected when I didn’t want and nothing I want to input, inputs. The pen worked great with Dr. Ketan’s ROM.

I realize I will never have TW functionality with this ROM but I was hoping I could at least use it for simple notes. None of the the on Play Store have helped with this issue. I really don’t want to smack it on the table as I don’t think there is anything wrong with the actual pen

Anyone know of an app that will stop my pen from being turned on all the time?

Hello, I can not use the security of the fingerprint sensor from the settings (I think there is a bug). I have one more question: my smartphone was root before doing the manipulation, it is still but I believe that SUPER SU does not work. Thank you.

    • Redeye Dog says:

I had trouble with root at first. Super SU wasn’t working right. After installing Magisk, superSU and root work fine.

Just complete upgrade my Note 4 yesterday. Works great … Mine has been continuously shut down, turn off, reboot, disconnect, frozen for the past 4-5 months since the release of 6.0.1. BTW, it’s the t-Mobile version SM-N910T. Here are a few small issues: 1/ Video recording does not work. 2/ Can’t use SmartSwitch to restore my old data (I got some back from my google backup) 3/ Bank of America app does not work 4/ Nextflix does not work … That’s all I got so far. Thanks for the video. I wish there is a way to get update from this site somehow (email list?) Thanks.
