How to Root Galaxy Note 4 using CWM/TWRP Method!

For those of you who want to root your Galaxy Note 4 and also install CWM or TWRP recovery at the same time (so you can backup, restore, and install ROMs), you can use the CWM/TWRP root method for rooting.

This root method works on all KitKat and Lollipop including Android 4.4.4, 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2.

For Android 5.1.1, please see new Android 5.1.1 root method here.

This root method will work on all Note 4 models except AT&T SM-N910A and Verizon SM-N910V, both of which have locked bootloaders (you will have to wait for Safestrap Recovery instead).

This root method will work on most Galaxy Note 4 models including:

  • SM-N910F – International
  • SM-N910G
  • SM-N910H
  • SM-N910T – T-Mobile U.S.
  • SM-N910P – Sprint
  • SM-N910R4 – US Cellular
  • SM-N910W8 – Canadian
  • SM-N910C – Thailand
  • SM-N910U – Hong Kong
  • SM-N910K/SM-N910L/SM-N910S – Korean KT, LG, SK Telecom
  • SM-N9100/SM-N9106W/SM-N9108V/SM-N9109W

Step 1. Check the model number of your Galaxy Note 4 under Settings->About device.

howto-root-galaxynote4-cwm-twrp-method-1

Step 2. Power off your Note 4 then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together until you see a warning screen like below:

howto-root-galaxynote4-cwm-twrp-method-2

Step 3. Hit Volume Up button to enter ODIN download mode and connect a micro-USB cable from your Note 4 to your computer.

Hello I have the SM-N910G and followed all of your steps but on the attempt to open TWRP after copy/pasting the UPDATE SU ZIP it boots up to a message saying no command and Android system recovery opens up.

    What do I do now?

    Regards Jason

    • Eric says:

Same thing was happening to me. I had to uncheck the auto reboot option and pull the battery after the pda installed. Then powered up straight into recorvery and installed supersu. Hope that helps.

      • Jason Smith says:

HI, I have tried that but when I do the PDA thing again it pauses halfway through. Is there a way to uninstall it so I can try re-install?

        Cheers

        • Eric says:

When it restarts, it doesnt stick so there is nothing to delete. It deletes itself basically. Uncheck all boxes. Make sure u r trying to run Twrp, correct provider, and the .tar(not the .img extension) file in pda. It will look like its still installing on ur phone but when odin says its done unplug and pull the battery. Then boot in recovery (volume up, home, and power in that order). Dont forget to but thw aupersu.zip on ur phone like i did first time around.

Hi there. Thanks for awesome tutorial. I got all the way to step 15, but SuperSU didn’t show up in my app drawer. Any suggestions? I tried to download SuperSU from Playstore, not sure if that has the same result. When I opened the app, it said it had to update binaries. I clicked Normal, but the update failed. Any suggestions? Thanks very much for your help!

  8. Eric says:

Boot in recovery and install supersu after u uninstalll the one u got from playstore.

    Dear Sir,

My name is Somala from Cambodia. I am now using Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Dual Sims(SM-N9100). I have read all your manual how to root the Galaxy Note4(SM-N900) by using CWM/TWRP method. I already downloaded file for flashing from your link location (http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyNote4/TWRP/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.2-treltexx.img.tar) and used it in ODIN and it works very well but when i try to break it by using SuperSU, it always start my phone to normally, so that’s mean it does not successful root? if so, how can i complete to root my phone?
Thanks for any helps from you.

    Best Regard,
    Somala

I want to root my TMobile Note 4. When I download the tar file and unzip it, I have only the IMG file. I checked the MD5 value and it comes out to be that of the IMG file. The same problem occurs for both CWM/TWRP download files. Anyone can help? TIA

    • Basil says:

Even though it shows it as an *.img file, it truly is however a *.tar file. If you right click that .img file and choose “Properties” and then click either the last tab on the diag box or the second from the end of tabs there it will show the true file name ending with “.img.tar”

Hey love you sites and used you to root all notes i have had.
Currently have the n910p sprint. I have fallowed your root method and cf auto root.
Its weird because everything works fine odin says pass ect. But my recovery is still factory. I tried flashing twrp and cwm and both just leave the recovery stock. When i used cf autoroot it installed SU on my phone and the root seems to be legit and working well but in still having issues with unlocking tethering and getting custom recovery.
    Any ideas?

  19. Chris Carlo says:

Your root method didn’t work for me this time around on my TMobile Note 4 . For some reason the TWRP Recovery didn’t stick. It gave me a android then a dead android. I’m not sure if your method still works? Let me know if I’m doing something wrong thank you.

  20. Paulinux says:

Hi I just want to share that this and the other method was Failing in Odin with my T mobile Note 4, I just couldn’t find why, I googled this and nothing one of the messages from phone was “secure check fail : recovery”
and in Odin was “FAIL! (Auth)”, on my phone setup I had fingerprint security, I removed with out luck, so I end up reset to factory state, as soon my phone turns on I try it again and “Voila” it works, I’m just sharing this in case they find on a Fail root with odin, thanks

      Hi,

I went though a same situation, and I figure that you don’t have to rest your phone. All you need is turn off the reactiveation lock, which under the security in setting.

This does not seem to work on lollipop 5.01

I run Odin, install the recovery. It looks ok at that point. I let the phone finish rebooting, then I power down. Press the up volume, home and power button, it says it’s installing a system update and then loads up the recovery that comes with the phone, not TWRP

    • Tele says:

Try the cf autoroot method…that should give you root…then, if you want TWRP, download the .img file and flash it through Flashify (available on playstore)

    • Dean says:

Try this, run Odin and flash the recovery again, make sure “Auto reboot” is NOT checked. Once done (when you see the green “Passed”. Unplug the USB cable, remove the battery, wait couple of seconds, re-insert the battery, press vol up + home + power to boot up, you should be able to boot to TWRP this time.

I followed your excellent tutorial but I am not sure I have successfully rooted my phone. I accidentally deleted some videos (I thought they were already backed up to Google+ but they were not!) and I am trying to recover them. They were stored in device memory and not on my SD card. I am advised that I need to root the phone to scan device memory for deleted files. Any advice on how to scan and recover deleted video files from my Note 4 device memory also would be appreciated!

Anyway, when I try to open Super User, I get a message saying “There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just updated to Android 5.0, you need to manually re-root-consult the relevant forums for your device!”

I have never tried to root a device before but I am guessing my attempt to root the Sprint Note 4 was not successful…

I kept trying and trying different ways of rooting my device after updating to Lollipop 5.0.1 and I kept getting a FAIL.
Someone on the comments mentioned the “reactivation lock” in the device’s settings and that was what was keeping my phone from being rooted.
    DISABLE REACTIVATION LOCK:
Go to your phone’s Settings > Security >
Scroll down to where it says “Reactivation Lock”. The check box was checked on my phone, and I un-checked it.
Right after that, I tried to root it again and it passed!!!!!

I’ve been working on this for days now and cant afford to keep losing sleep/days on this. it is rooted, latest twrp running on it, tried many roms, resurrection remix, cmremix, slimremix, dirty unicorns, liquid smooth, NONE allow to move. i’ve formatted the card on pc and in phone, its a 32gb card. tried 2 other cards, same error – “couldn’t move app. Not enough storage space.” Really tried so many things and kinda feeling like nothing else i can do. I never ask for help and have rooted devices before, note 2, m8, zmax, g3, a100, captivate….please, anyone?
